Learning Time

For Learning Time today we SHOULD go to the library because our books are soooooo overdue. BUT I know we won't make it to the library because we are going to jump zone instead. So basically I wrote the previous two sentences as both a confession and a reminder to eventually get by the library. thanks

What I am thinking we will really do for learning time today is good ol' flashcards. Yep, what says learning time more then flashcards. Colby has some basic reading cards and we will just keep reviewing animals and shapes with Cohen.

Learning Time

Ok girls, Mark it in the history books, we actually did some REAL learning time this week. We are 99.9% sure Colby is going to kindergarten next year and so he prefers to call learning time "Kindergarten Time" but anyways... we gotter done.

While in Las Vegas I picked up a little Kindergarten Readiness Activity Book for Colby at the bookstore and so Monday and Tuesday we got it out. It has some simple word flash cards and then a simple addition/subtraction workbook. Ya'll the boy loved em. You should have seen him working those math problems. Well actually you can.....

CoCo (aka Cohen) and I reviewed body parts as well as looked at some animal flash cards. Cohen can now say ball, car, uh oh, dada, and when upset Mama! I am going to fill out paperwork TODAY for a speech therapy evaluation. So I am expecting an explosion of words over the next couple of months.

Learning Time

At bedtime for the last couple of weeks we have been reading Dave Ramsey's Children's Series on financial planning. I know what your thinking... BUT can we really start too young teaching our children to be responsible with money. Anyways... Most of the books focus around the importance of designating earned money into "GIVE," "Save," and "Spend" envelopes. DH developed a chore chart a couple of weeks ago for Colby to earn a few nickles and dimes for helping out around the house. Were talking $0.05 for making his bed; $0.05 for making sure toys are in the toy box; and $0.10 for playing with Cohen in the bathtub at bath time.

Anyways... today I am planning on helping Colby make "Give, Save, and Spend" envelopes and we will go ahead and divvy up his earnings into the appropriate envelopes.

For Cohen, we continue to work on body parts and learning how to talk. He is quite confident with his belly button and facial features but just refuses to say a word! There is NO doubt he knows what we are talking about because he can follow commands. He just seems to have no interest in trying to communicate back, other then pointing and grunting. We have been spending a lot more time reading books and purposefully describing all actions and things to him- but so far no change! I would love any tips you have to offer!

Learning Time

Ok folks, I've got to get really serious about learning time! I have been given 1 month to teach my now 16 month old how to talk or off to Speech Therapy we go! I have been instructed to stop giving in to his pointing and grunting when he wants something but instead to make him ask for it. Now given the fact he has yet to even say Mommy or Daddy I feel it is in his best interest to go ahead and give into his requests for basic needs (nourishment, comforting, Mommy, etc) after a sufficient number of "say (fill in the blank)" have been said. But I have been following Doctor's orders to increase our daily reading time. So my hope is he will be talking in full sentences by next weekend- ok, I would be tickled pink if he would just say Mama.

Big News: Last night, during bath time, Cohen not only showed me his belly button but also pointed to his nose, mouth, and ears!!! Sing Praise!

As for my big boy, Colby continues to work on his writing. He is definitely doing better but if you weren't his mama you might not be able to read what he writes.

Learning Time

For Learning Time today:

Colby and I will play Leap Frog Dominoes. Colby got this for Christmas, and I have to admit that I have not had a chance to play this with him yet. He has watched Daddy and me play dominoes before and wanted to join in, so I think he will enjoy it.

The neat thing about this dominoes is that you can change out the picture to work on: colors, shapes, numbers, counting, rhyming, or reading. Learning while playing got to love that!

Cohen and I are going to spend some extra reading time together and continue working on finding his nose!
